George Jesse Witt, 81, of Greenfield, died April 7, 2024, at his home with his family by his side. He was born October 6, 1942, in Trenton, Michigan to Jesse and Alma (Russ) Witt. He married Betty Roth May 23, 1964, in Jacksonville, and she survives.
Also surviving are his children, Kenneth Jesse (Heather) Witt of Greenfield, and Mark Daniel Witt of Evansville, Indiana, and one grandson, Grant Kenneth Witt.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, Todd Eric Witt, his sisters, Jane Stice and Ruth Hensel, and his brothers, Dean Witt and Roy Reid.
George was a 1960 graduate of Greenfield High School. After high school, he was a welder at Allis Chalmers in Springfield for 15 years. He then farmed on the family farm until his retirement. He liked old tractors and cars and enjoyed going to antique sales and shows. He was a member of St. Michaels Church and St. Michaels Men’s Club. He was a member of the Greene County Farm Bureau. He and several other farmers organized the Classic Iron Antique Club.
Visitation will be from 4 until 7 pm Wednesday, April 10, at the Shields-Bishop Funeral Home in Greenfield. A prayer service will precede the visitation at 3:45 pm. A funeral mass will be held Thursday, April 11, at 10:30 am at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Greenfield. Burial will follow at the Hickory Grove Cemetery near Wrights.
