Betty L. Johnson, 90, of Rockbridge, died Wednesday, July 5, 2023, at Heritage Health in Carlinville. She was born December 10, 1932, in Jerseyville to Raymond and Ada (Reno) Thiel. She married Wayne Johnson April 7, 1950, in Kane and he preceded her in death January 3, 2016.
Surviving are two children, Ron (Linda) Johnson, of Shipman and Ann (Lou) Walden of Rockbridge, grandchildren, Shelly Custer, Tonya Fenton, Jennifer Walden-Pond, Scott Gage, Kyle Johnson, Jeffrey Johnson and Jared Johnson, sixteen great-grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren, and a daughter-in-law, Cindy Johnson.
She was preceded in death by a son, Rodney Johnson, a brother Ornan Thiel, and a great-great grandson, Newt Custer.
Betty was an active member of the Rockbridge Methodist Church. She was the secretary for the South Side Stock Farm, and the Midwest Illinois Racing Association. She enjoyed quilting and sewing and was known for “famous” homemade noodles and pies, and always made sure to have plenty of “Grammy’s noodles” at family dinners. She was honored in 2022 at the Rockbridge sesquicentennial as the oldest woman of Rockbridge. Her greatest joy in her life came from caring for and following the activities of her family.
Cremation rites will be accorded, and a graveside service will be held Saturday, July 15, at 11 am, at the Witt Cemetery in Rockbridge. Memorials are suggested to the Rockbridge Methodist Church or the Witt Cemetery. The Shields-Bishop funeral home in Greenfield is assisting the family with arrangements.
