Donald E. Ballard, 76, of rural Carrollton, died Saturday, February 13, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. He was born June 20, 1944, in Carrollton, to Thomas and Elizabeth (Knisley) Ballard.
Surviving are two sons, Jake, of Springfield, and Jonas, of Greenfield, two grandsons, Camryn and Lane, of Greenfield, two sisters, Eva (Lewis) McClenning of White Hall, and Linda (Gary) Motley of Hettick, two brothers, Larry Jo, and Kirby (Peggy), both of Carrollton and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Jaxon, and a sister-in-law, Bonnie Ballard.
Don was a 1962 graduate of Greenfield High School where he excelled in football. He is still listed in the State of Illinois football record book for most returned interceptions for touchdowns in a game and in a season. He was involved in agriculture his entire life. He especially enjoyed working with livestock. He served on the Greene County Fair Board and served as the sheep Superintendent for many years. He enjoyed playing softball in his younger years.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, February 20, at 11 am at the Shields-Bishop Funeral Home in Greenfield. Visitation will be from 5 until 7 pm on Friday at the funeral home. The family requests that you wear a mask if you plan on attending services. Burial will be at the Oak Wood Cemetery north of Greenfield. Memorials are suggested to the Greene County Fair.
