Donald E. Chapman, 72, of Greenfield, passed away, Saturday, July 27, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. He was born September 3, 1951 in White Hall to Richard and Hilda (Van Meter) Chapman. He married Monze Thornton, September 3, 1969 at Charity Southern Baptist Church in Greenfield, and she survives.
Also surviving is a son, Kory E. (Sandy) Chapman of Greenfield, two grandsons, Kory M. Chapman of Greenfield, and Patrick E. Chapman of Alton, four great-grandchildren, Makayla, Hoyt, Riley, and Waylon, a sister, Sandy Kelso of Springfield, brothers, Michael Chapman of Peoria and Raymond (Karen) Chapman of Bloomington, Indiana.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Linda Brogdon, and two brothers, Richard Chapman Jr. and Robert Chapman.
Don was very active in Greenfield. He was a member of the Charity Southern Baptist Church. He served on the Greenfield Fire Protection District for 35 years, and served on the City Council for 30 years, 10 of them as mayor. He worked at the Greenfield School District as a maintenance supervisor for 20 years and retired from the Jacksonville Development Center after 10 years of service. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, watching the St. Louis Cardinals and the Greenfield-Northwestern Tigers. He loved helping the kids at school, but most of all, loved his family and following all of their activities. He will be missed by many.
A graveside service will be held Friday, August 2, 2024 at 11 am at the Oak Wood Cemetery north of Greenfield. Memorials are requested to the Charity Southern Baptist Church in Greenfield, or the Greenfield Fire Protection District, and can be mailed to 604 Walnut Street, Greenfield, IL. 62044.
