Gale L. Dixon

Gale Leon Dixon, 96, of Carlinville, formerly of Greenfield was called to his heavenly home Wednesday, November 26, 2025.

Gale was born on July 15, 1929, to Jeff and Faye Scott Dixon in rural Hettick. Gale married Betty Summers of Murrayville on February 12, 1956. Gale is survived by one daughter, Becky (Stan) McClelland and five grandchildren, Jeffrey (fiancée Jessica) Dixon of Greeley, Colorado, Melinda McClelland of Springfield, Kyle (Lindsay) McClelland of Greenfield, Alissa (Matt) Frank of Greenfield and Brett (Hannah) McClelland of Chicago. There are eight great-grandchildren, Sam, Cooper and Evie Dixon of Greeley, Colorado, Lainey and Presley Frank of Greenfield and Carson, Grant and Nolan McClelland, also of Greenfield. There are two great-great grandchildren Emiliana and Azaiah of Greeley, Colorado. Gale is also survived by his brother-in-law Randell Peters of Carrollton, sister-in-law Linda Gibson of DeSoto, Missouri and several nieces and nephews.

Gale was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Betty, son Tim, his sister Norma Peters and brother Dennis Dixon.

Gale graduated in 1948 from Greenfield High School and attended two years at Western Illinois University before being drafted into the Army. Gale then served a tour of duty in Korea. After his service ended, he started farming with his father. Gale was an active farmer, raising beef cows, hogs, sheep, and row crops. He was also a loyal Cardinals baseball fan and University of Illinois football and basketball fan. Gale played football in high school and at Western Illinois University. He also participated in a church softball league, bowling league, and horseshoe tournaments. He and Archie Barnett were State Champions in horseshoe doubles.

Gale was also a supporter of all his grandkids activities and loved to go to all their games. Football remained a favorite. Gale had many hobbies including building a ½ scale Case Steam engine and restoring old tractors. Gale was a past president of Classic Iron Antique Tractor Club. He loved to demonstrate the old equipment for school kids at Greene County Days and Greenfield Homecoming. He always had a tractor or two in the Triennial Homecoming parade. He served as a Rubicon Township official for many years. Gale was also honored by participating in a Veterans Honor Flight to Washington D.C.

Gale was a devoted follower of Jesus Christ. He served First Baptist Church and Charity Baptist Church as deacon and trustee. He never missed a chance to be in church and shared his testimony many times.

A visitation will be held on Monday, December 1st at Shields-Bishop Funeral home from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, December 2nd at Charity Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m.

Memorials are suggested to Charity Baptist Church Building Fund or Greenfield High School FFA Chapter.
