Harold (Rut) Russell Hillis, 76, of Greenfield, went to be with the Lord on June 15, 2022. He was born April 10, 1946, in Carrollton, to Russell and Lettie Hillis.
He married Nancy Settles, December 4, 1968, and she preceded him in death March 31, 2022.
He is survived by sons, Michael Hillis of Greenfield, and Robert Hillis (Jesse) (Tyler and Tatum) of Roodhouse, and grandsons, Peyton Hillis of Alton and Hunter Hillis of Roodhouse, two sisters Sandra Butler (Leo) of Temple, TX and Monna Phillips of Carrollton, and a brother Frank Hillis (Pam) of Carrollton.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister, and a sister and brother-in-law, Donna Ann and Wes Hawkins.
He loved his sons and grandsons as well as a large extended family. He and Nancy hosted “many” large family gatherings for many years, enjoying every minute. Many memories were made in their home for all.
He received and honorable discharge from the U.S. Army in 1969 after serving in the Vietnam War and becoming a drill sergeant at Fr. Leonard Wood, MO. After his service duties he was employed at Olin (The Western) for over 40 years. After Retirement, he enjoyed nearly three years as a bus driver for the Greenfield School District. He also became a co-babysitter, along with “Nana” to Alexis, Stetson, Cailyn, and “Baby Danika” which became the highlight of his day.
He was a strong believer in God. As a member of the Fayette Baptist church, he served as a teacher and deacon for many years. He also attended Berdan Baptist Church.
Per his wishes, cremation rites will be accorded, and a private family service will be held at a later date. Rut was an avid fan of Greenfield High School sports. Memorials donations can be made in his memory to the Tiger Backers, and mailed to the Shields-Bishop Funeral Home, 604 Walnut St., Greenfield, IL. 62044.
