Mary Love Hammon, 94, of Greenfield, passed away Friday, April 14, at the Auburn Nursing and Rehab Center. She was born November 9, 1922 in Hettick, to Nile and Carrie (Jennings) Love. She married William Dale Hammon March 20, 1941 in Moberly, Mo. and he preceded her in death, November 29, 2002.
Surviving is one son Clifton D. (Shirley) Hammon of Sherman, IL., a grandson, Jeremy (Brooklyn) Crumly of Joliet and three great-grandchildren, Ayden, Addisonn, and Averie, and a sister, Melba Robinson of Fountain, Co.
She was preceded in death by a half-brother, Elmer Love.
Growing up she lived with her parents in Alton, on a dairy farm north of Greenfield, on "the hill" east of Fayette before moving to Greenfield where they resided on the East part of Mulberry. The Great Depression and WWII shaped her life for years that followed. She started her working career de-tasseling corn with her sister Melba. She later was employed by a local bookkeeper by the name of Claude Bell. She and her sister next teamed up in the respect that they both began teaching Country school. In the mid to late 50's she assisted her husband Dale in managing the Greenfield roller rink, learning and teaching various routines such as the Grand Waltz. In the 60's she joined the Avon Corporation and earned a spot on their President's Club for many years. Following her retirement she spent more time visiting with her sister and her children and their great niece and nephew. She was a avid fan of music. She enjoyed the Big Bands and dancing. She spent many hours playing her piano, mostly by memory. It was not unusual for her to play several religious and patriotic songs in a row. Following the death of her husband she became involved in writing a column for Greenfield in the Greene Prairie Press. She presented the news in her own style, mixing the current with memories from the past, receiving many compliments from former and current residents along and others not from Greenfield who had the opportunity to read the Press. Her latest greatest joys were her great grandchildren, the "Triple A's" who she loved dearly. She was a devoted member to the White Hall Presbyterian Church. During her last few years she was pleased and uplifted by the many friends who would call or stop by for a visit.
Cremation rites will be accorded and a memorial graveside service will be at Oak Wood Cemetery north of Greenfield Thursday, May 25, 2017 at 11 am. Memorials are suggested to the Oak Wood Cemetery.
