Mary Smith Obituary

Mary Colette Smith, age 73, died September 3, 2022, in Wheaton, IL where she had lived since 2006.

Born March 15, 1949 at MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn, IL, to the late Robert T. Smith and Bernadine Cole Smith. She was the granddaughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. K.T. Smith and Mr. & Mrs. George N. Cole, of Greenfield, IL.

Colette attended Haley Elementary School in Stickney, IL. While growing up she spent a part of each summer in Greenfield, IL with relatives and attended Camp Miniwanca in Stony Lake, MI. She graduated from Morton West High School, Berwyn, IL, in 1967. She then took classes at Lincoln College in Lincoln, IL and Tarkio College in Tarkio, MO, where she was a music major in keyboard studies. A member of their Concert Choir, she traveled throughout the U.S., England, and France, performing and touring famous sites.

Colette worked at Clyde Federal Savings & Loan in Berwyn for many years and later volunteered regularly at Christ Church of Oakbrook, IL.

She is survived by brothers Robert (Judith) and Charles (Patricia). Loving aunt to Alyson, Kimberly (David), Eric (Teresa), Jessica (Michael), Amanda (Cody) and Steven (Andrea). She delighted in her great-nieces and great-nephews Madelyn, Mitchell, Megan, Meredith, Ciré, Audra, Alexander, Caroline, Colin, Ethan, Violet, Mara, and Sullivan.

Kind and gentle, Colette loved to share stories. She would regale family and friends of her very premature birth as she was only 2 pounds when born, about her summers at her Grandmothers’ or Aunts’ homes, shopping at Marshall Fields and having lunch at the Walnut Room with her mother, and all of her trips to Greenfield for family reunions. She had a boisterous laugh, loved bright colors and sequins, making jewelry and playing and listening to organ music. Colette had a lifelong interest in all things Star Trek related and she made a point of gifting her brothers with special Star Trek ornaments each Christmas for years. She was incredibly proud of her family and took special care in researching family genealogy.
