Mildred E. Witt, a life-long resident of Greenfield, Illinois, passed away peacefully at the White Hall Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in the early morning of August 5, 2021.
She was born January 26, 1928, to Charles A. Fergurson and Anna C. Fergurson (Shepherd) in the Roodhouse area. Both her parents have preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Ebert E. Fergurson, Charles, Jr. (Junie) Fergurson, and Ronald Fergurson, as well as several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Mildred married William “Bill” Witt, on July 11, 1946, who was a local trucker in the Greenfield area. Bill died in August, 1983.
Mildred is survived by two children, Pamela Cassagnol of Atlanta, Georgia, and William “Greg” Witt (Jan) of Rockbridge. She has five grandchildren, Steven Maxvill of Springfield, Charissa Delp (Michael) of Bloomington, Indiana, Lisa Cassagnol of Atlanta, Georgia, Matthew Witt of Greenfield, and Katie Witt-Becherer (Phillip) of Hinckley, Illinois. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren, Skylar Maxvill (Tennessee), Liam, Kennedy, and Jackson Delp, Gregory Witt, and Ellie Becherer, and a great-great-grandson, Waylon York, in Tennessee. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, and other family members.
Mildred worked in Greenfield at Mabel Cole’s dry good store, Meng & Secor, Hamilton’s Dry Goods, and Ridings Dry Goods. She also worked for over 17 years at Walmart in Jacksonville in the fabric department. For years, she did dressmaking and tailoring for several Greenfield area ladies.
After retiring in 2000, she spent a lot of her time working in her yard and was an avid gardener. She even won the “Pride of Greenfield” for her yard, of which she was particularly proud. She enjoyed reading National Geographic and the Reader’s Digest, and doing word search games.
Mildred was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Greenfield United Methodist Church and participated in the women’s groups.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A celebration of life will be held at 11 am, Saturday, February 19, 2022, at the Greenfield United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 10 am until time of service. Burial will be private, at the Oak Wood Cemetery, north of Greenfield. Memorials are suggested to the Greenfield United Methodist Church or the Greenfield Public Library. The Shields-Bishop Funeral Home is assisting the family.
