Norma L. Maggart, 87, of Greenfield, passed away Friday morning, July 30th at Jerseyville Manor. She was born November 5, 1933, in Rosemont, IL. to William H. and Edna M. (Jones) Middleton. She married Arlie Maggart Jr., June 12, 1955 in Rockbridge, and he preceded her in death September 8, 2002.
Surviving is a daughter, Mary (Buddy) Dalton of Greenfield, two sons, Baxter (Donna) Maggart, of Greenfield and Dan (T.J.) Maggart of Winchester, a daughter-in-law, Janet Maggart of Henry, TN., grandchildren, Heather, Laury, Elizabeth, Katie, Jeb, Jed, Kristen, Mollie, Baxie, Amy, Jennifer, Rachel, Brittany, Brenton, Carlie, Sydni, and Luke, and twenty great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Jim Maggart, and a sister, Jacque Williams.
Norma worked as a bookkeeper at the Rockbridge Elevator, as a secretary for Greenfield High School, in Mabel Cole’s dress shop and Pennington’s dime store. After marriage, she became an Air Force wife where she made many friends. Her husband, Arlie, retired from the Air Force as a Lt. Colonel, and her family returned to Greenfield, where she worked for JoAnn’s accounting service for a short time. She was a member of the Charity Southern Baptist Church, where she received a pin for perfect attendance in Sunday School for 39 years. She was a wonderful cook and an amazing mother. She will be missed by many.
A graveside service will be held at 10 am Thursday, August 5, at the Oak Wood Cemetery north of Greenfield. Memorials are suggested to the Charity Southern Baptist Church or the Clowder House Foundation, a no-kill animal shelter. The Shields-Bishop Funeral Home in Greenfield is assisting the family.
