Obituary

Steven Leroy Settles, 56, of Greenfield passed early January 22, 2023 surrounded by his family at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, IL. Steve was born March 7, 1966 in Carrollton, IL to Wendy (Wood) Butler and Denny Settles and they survive. After graduating from Greenfield High School in 1984 he served in the United States Navy as a Machinist Mate from 1984 – 1988.

In 1989 he met his soulmate and best friend Kimberly (Strickler) Settles and she survives. They married on April 23, 1992. Together they joined and built a family of two girls, one boy, and five grandchildren.

He is also survived by his daughters, Stephanie (Kaleb) Vetter of Greenfield, Sara (Shaun) Morton of Carlinville, son Dakota Settles (Madison Weber) of White Hall, his grandchildren; Hayden, Kohen, and Brennen Vetter of Greenfield, Ashley (Wesley) Wingert of Marion, OH, and Alex Morton of Carlinville, stepdad Chris Butler of Jacksonville, brother Scott Settles of Jacksonville, sister Barbara (Chad) Gaige of Jacksonville, brother Austin Settles of Greenfield, several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by both his paternal and maternal grandparents.

Steve was a jack of all trades. He worked several jobs over the years supporting his family which include a laborer in the railyard, delivery driver for Sysco foods, over the road truck driver for Reichman Transport and other trucking companies, he enjoyed being a police officer for several years, and was a Maintenance and Project Supervisor at Oros and Busch. In recent years he was a caregiver to his mother-in-law Wanda Strickler.

Steve loved his family! He loved participating in events and organizations that his children and grandchildren were involved in. He sat in bleachers and stood on sidelines for countless ball games. He was active in the Youth League taking on the role as commissioner, umpired numerous games, and enjoyed coaching both softball and baseball. He participated in Boy Scouts with his son and had significant influence in creating the Boy Scouts Camp at Rives Lake in Greenfield. He enjoyed his horses and the many family camping trips cooking with his cast iron. Steve loved cookouts with his family and cooking dishes for family gatherings; especially baking pies. You could often find him working on and fixing things around the house, automobiles, and whatever he could find. He had more patience than most in teaching younger kids about whatever he was working on. Steve was a kind soul and he will be greatly missed.

Cremation rights will be accorded. The family will receive friends and family from 1:00 – 3:00 at Shields-Bishop Funeral Home on Sunday, January 29, 2023.
